Nicolas Lerner, Director General of France’s Directorate-General for External Security (DGSE), visited Minsk this week on the instructions of French President Emmanuel Macron. The information was reported by Pozirk, citing a diplomatic source, and confirms claims previously published on social media by former Belarusian presidential candidate Valery Tsapkala.
According to Tsapkala, the talks focused on regional security, preserving Belarus’s non-nuclear status, and preventing the country from being drawn into the Russian-Ukrainian war.
“Lukashenka was warned of the serious political, economic, and international legal consequences that could follow any further escalation,” Tsapkala wrote.
According to him, Lukashenka assured the French side that Belarus did not intend to allow aggressive actions against Ukraine from its territory. The parties also discussed the release of political prisoners, the humanitarian situation in Belarus, prospects for cooperation with the European Union, and sanctions policy.
“According to sources, Nicolas Lerner has already briefed the President of France on the results of the talks. The information presented was received positively at the Élysée Palace,” Tsapkala added.
Lukashenka announced the upcoming visit of Macron’s representative on May 29 in Astana, suggesting that it could take place on June 1 or 2. A telephone conversation between Macron and Lukashenka took place on May 24.
