Poland wants to impose a large fine on Meta, the company that controls Facebook, Instagram and Threads. Digitalization Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski said this.
“After analyzing the materials, including those received from Meta, as well as subsequent media reports about the lack of control over published content, I sent an official request to the European Commission calling for the platform to be fined 250 million euros.
Inaction and ineffectiveness in combating advertising and misleading content harmful to Poles are unacceptable.
I expect the European Commission to promptly conduct an investigation and impose a fine. There is ample evidence,” he said.
According to the minister, the problem has already been thoroughly documented by Polish authorities. CERt Polska identified 122 fraudulent advertisements and sent relevant requests to Meta, but the advertising was removed in only 10 cases. In more than 80% of cases, the U.S. company refused to remove the advertisements. These included fraudulent advertisements using the image of Rafał Brzoska, CEO of Polish company InPost. A request to remove such advertisements received a negative response.
