The buffer zone on Poland’s border with Belarus will remain in force until August 31. The decision was taken by Poland’s Minister of Interior and Administration.

“This decision is driven by the need to maintain the highest level of operational vigilance and a high degree of border protection effectiveness,” the ministry said.

The ministry also noted that only 215 attempts by migrants to cross the border illegally were recorded between January and May 2026, a 98% decrease compared with the same period in 2025, when more than 10,600 attempts were registered.

The buffer zone was introduced on June 13, 2024. It prohibits access to designated areas along the border. The zone covers a 78.29-kilometre section of the frontier within the jurisdiction of Border Guard units in Michałowo, Narewka, Białowieża, Dubicze Cerkiewne and Czeremcha.

Along a 59.24-kilometre stretch, the zone extends 200 metres from the border line. On a 15.26-kilometre section located near nature reserves, the zone is approximately 2 kilometres wide, while on a further 3.79-kilometre section it extends around 4 kilometres inland.

The measure is renewed every 90 days.
