Former political prisoner and journalist Andrzej Poczobut said he wants to try to return to Belarus. He made the remarks in an interview with Gazeta Wyborcza.
“I want to try to return to Belarus. It all depends on what happens at the border — whether they let me in, as promised, or not”, he said.
“And if they let you in and then imprison you again?”, interviewer Bartosz Wieliński asked.
“Then I will serve the time. It is difficult — Nelson Mandela spent so many years in prison, soldiers of the Home Army were imprisoned as well”, Poczobut replied.
In the interview, he again confirmed that he had been promised the possibility of returning to Belarus. During the exchange that took place last week, Poczobut asked KGB officers about this. He also reiterated what he had previously told the press: an official from Lukashenka’s administration came to persuade him and personally confirmed that he would be able to return.
Answering a question about Belarus’s future, Poczobut said that Alyaksandr Lukashenka would try to remain in power as long as possible and that “Belarusian medicine will do everything to ensure his health”. In his view, Lukashenka will be followed by Lukashenka.
“Will his son Viktar take power?”, the interviewer asked.
“It will be more or less the same, just slightly different. Look at what is happening in Central Asia. Succession from father to son is the most reliable way of transferring power. It has worked in Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan”, Poczobut said.
