Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda expects a sustainable resolution of the balloon crisis, both as a result of negotiation efforts by allies and the actions of Lithuanian law enforcement agencies. He also expressed readiness to take necessary steps to resolve the situation involving trucks operated by Lithuanian carriers.

“First of all, I would like to draw attention to the fact that we are dealing with a regime that has been difficult to predict over the past five years, and therefore we should not rely too heavily on the goodwill of this regime. In any case, I think that the efforts of our American allies, our partners in the European Union, as well as our own efforts, have so far produced a truly positive result.

I do not think that the essence of the issue lies exclusively in politics, because there are many aspects related to smuggling and its prevention. And the services are indeed working excellently in this area. These are already very clear results, so I think that by working comprehensively we will stabilize the situation. We will make the situation sustainable, and we will have to talk about other issues, not this one,” he said in an interview with Žinių radijas summarizing the year.

The President of Lithuania was also asked about the situation with Lithuanian trucks that remain on the territory of Belarus. Nausėda noted that there are full opportunities for negotiations at the technical level, and that the Lithuanian side is making use of them.

“I think that at the technical level there are certainly all opportunities for negotiations, for resolving issues in a civilized manner, if the other side has at least the slightest desire to do so. We will definitely make use of all possibilities, and we are already doing so,” he said.
