Prosecutors have referred a criminal fraud case to court. A 30-year-old man has been charged in connection with a cryptocurrency investment scheme.
According to the prosecution, the Minsk resident obtained money and cryptocurrency worth more than 1.5 million Belarusian roubles from nine individuals by promising guaranteed returns from investments in cryptocurrency projects.
He administered several Telegram chats in which he demonstrated extensive knowledge and expertise in cryptocurrency matters. As a result, he succeeded in persuading the victims to invest.
“Having numerous outstanding debts, the accused misled the victims about the purpose for which he was obtaining their assets and convinced them of the high profitability and reliability of the investments. Some of the victims were friends and former classmates of the accused and therefore had no reason to doubt his statements.
It was established that the accused suffered from a gambling addiction and spent all of the stolen money in online casinos,” the prosecutor’s office said.
The man admitted his guilt but has not compensated for the damage. He remains in custody.
