The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry has officially confirmed the detention and imprisonment in Belarus of Lithuanian citizen Miroslavas Trockis, Delfi reports. Human rights defenders had earlier said that he had been sentenced to 15 years in a high-security penal colony on charges of espionage and agent activity.

According to them, Trockis travelled to Belarus in autumn 2024 to visit relatives. He was detained there and charged with espionage.

“We can confirm that this citizen of the Republic of Lithuania has been detained and placed in custody in the Republic of Belarus. His detention was reported to the Lithuanian embassy in Minsk, a consul visited the person, and constant contact is being maintained with relatives. We cannot provide additional information due to the protection of personal data”, the Communications and Cultural Diplomacy Department of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said.

The ministry added that it “has for several years strongly recommended that Lithuanian citizens refrain from travelling to Belarus, and that those already in the country should leave immediately because of the risk of detention”.

Lithuania’s State Security Department confirmed that it was aware of the published information but declined to comment publicly. The agency recalled repeated warnings by the intelligence services about the risk of provocations during trips to Belarus and Russia.
