The Lithuanian road transport association Linava has submitted an appeal to the European Commission regarding trucks detained in Belarus.
In its appeal, the association calls for an official assessment of the situation and of a possible violation of the European Union’s economic interests. Road carriers are also seeking diplomatic and legal action at the EU level to secure the return of the detained vehicles, an evaluation of potential legal and financial mechanisms at the EU level that could create grounds for compensation claims for damages incurred, as well as informing member states and carriers about the heightened risks of conducting road transport operations in Belarus.
The association’s statement also says it has information about 1,071 vehicles detained in Belarus. They belong to 149 Lithuanian companies. A total of 496 tractor units and 575 semi-trailers remain in Belarus. The total value of the detained vehicles amounts to €15.9 million. In addition, six more companies have preliminarily reported the possible seizure of 401 vehicles in Belarus. If confirmed, the number of detained vehicles would rise to 1,472 units, with an estimated value of nearly €22 million.
