Israel has carried out a preemptive strike on Iran, and a state of emergency has been declared in the country. This was announced by Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz.
“The State of Israel has launched a preemptive strike against Iran to remove threats to the State of Israel,” The Times of Israel quoted him as saying.
Amid reports of the attack, air raid sirens sounded across Israel. The Israel Defense Forces, via the Home Front Command, sent emergency alerts to mobile phones urging residents to stay close to protected rooms and shelters.
The military said the warning was preventive in nature and aimed at preparing the population for a possible missile attack on the country. Citizens were advised to check the locations of nearby shelters and refrain from non-essential travel.
Following a situation assessment, changes to Home Front Command instructions will take effect from 08:00. All regions of the country have been shifted from full activity to a regime allowing only essential sectors to operate. In particular, educational activities, mass events and the operation of businesses have been suspended, with the exception of critical services.
