A Ukrainian citizen attempted to leave Belarus with undeclared cash, while a German citizen declared only half of the money he was carrying. Criminal proceedings have been launched, the State Customs Committee reported.

The Ukrainian woman was travelling from Belarus to Poland through the Brest border checkpoint by car. At customs, she chose the green corridor. During inspection, officers found USD 42,000 on her. She had hidden the money in tights wrapped around her body.

A criminal case was opened under Part 2 of Article 228 of the Criminal Code for the illegal transportation of cash across the border. The offence is punishable by a fine, restriction of liberty for up to five years, or imprisonment for the same term.

A 43-year-old German citizen was detained at the same border checkpoint. He was entering Belarus in an Audi and declared EUR 70,000, but customs officers found an additional amount equivalent to USD 73,000 in the armrest and in a bag.

A criminal case has been initiated. The man has been placed in custody.
