The Lithuanian Seimas has voted to strip former prime minister Saulius Skvernelis of his parliamentary immunity.

Lithuania’s Prosecutor General’s Office requested that his immunity be lifted. Skvernelis is suspected in a corruption case involving the State Plant Service. According to investigators, he accepted bribes in several stages totalling at least 51,000 euros in exchange for patronage.

Skvernelis himself asked lawmakers to vote in favour of lifting his immunity so that he could become a participant in the criminal proceedings and exercise all of his rights.

Saulius Skvernelis has also stepped down as leader of the Democrats “For Lithuania” party.
