Belarusian citizens detained as part of the investigation into the murder of Russian artist Semyon Skrepetsky in Biała Podlaska have been released. This was announced by district prosecutor’s office spokesperson Marcin Kozak.
“I can inform you that the two citizens of the Republic of Belarus detained in this case have been released. Their involvement in this incident, which was the subject of a very intensive investigation, was not confirmed. It turned out that they were not connected to the investigation and had no link to the case. Therefore, after being questioned as witnesses, they were released and are no longer being held in connection with this matter,” he said.
According to Kozak, investigators are working with several theories, but he declined to disclose them.
“As part of the investigation, we have gathered an extensive body of evidence to the necessary extent. This evidence is being continuously analysed. We are collecting all available information, examining digital materials, surveillance camera recordings and reviewing witness statements,” he said.
Responding to a follow-up question, Kozak noted that police often have to process large volumes of evidence, which can result in the detention of individuals initially believed to be connected to a case.
“The police’s initial findings indicated the possible involvement of these two men in the incident and the case. Therefore, they were detained pending further proceedings. The collected evidence was subjected to a very detailed analysis, and that analysis did not confirm the initial suspicions regarding their involvement in the murder. Therefore, after questioning, they were released,” he said.
No other individuals have been detained as part of the investigation so far.
