In 2025, Belarus supplied about 27,000 tonnes of peat products to China, nearly 13 times more than in 2024. Valery Kavalyou, Director General of the Beltopgaz production association, told the newspaper SB. Belarus Segodnya.
“For 2026–2030, we are setting the task of more than doubling supplies to China and increasing exports to CIS countries and more distant markets,” Kavalyou said.
The official noted that 74 percent of exports consist of non-fuel products. These include, among other things, nutrient soils.
“In 2025, exports of high-moor baled peat and nutrient soils reached 54,000 tonnes — a 23 percent increase compared with the previous year,” the specialist commented.
According to the article, peat reserves in Belarus are estimated at 2.4 billion tonnes, of which about 302 million tonnes (12 percent) have been designated for industrial development. Peat extraction in the country began in 1896 and reached its peak in 1974 at almost 17 million tonnes, including 9.1 million tonnes of fuel peat and 7.7 million tonnes for agricultural needs. Production later declined due to the introduction of gas and fuel oil in the energy sector.
