School classes are not being cancelled despite freezing temperatures because the cold has not yet reached levels that would warrant such a decision. Deputy Education Minister Alyaksandr Kadlubai said this on STV.

“Based on what we see today and understand from the temperature regime — and we are monitoring the situation across all our regions: in Viciebsk, in Mahilyow, in Homyel, where last Friday there was slightly more snow than is typical for a Belarusian winter — we want to note that in a number of districts, where school transport was in place, decisions were taken to suspend transport services. Issues were worked through with families so as not to expose children to unnecessary risk during transportation, but by Saturday all of this had already been restored.

Today, regarding yesterday and today, we can say that school transport is functioning across the Republic of Belarus, there are no violations of temperature standards in educational institutions, and the outdoor air temperature has not yet reached the range at which it is necessary to take a decision to suspend the operation of educational institutions,” he said.
