Belarus’s Ambassador to Israel Yury Yarashevich and First Deputy Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Yacov Livne discussed issues related to the preservation of historical memory, the implementation of Holocaust-related projects, and cooperation in the cultural and religious spheres. The meeting took place on February 11, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry press service reported.
The interlocutors reviewed a “broad range of issues on the bilateral agenda,” placing particular emphasis on the importance of preserving the memory of the tragedies of World War II and the Holocaust. They discussed the implementation of a project to establish a Holocaust and Resistance Museum in Navahrudak.
The Belarusian side stressed the importance of preserving historically significant sites, including the recently restored building of the Jewish yeshiva in Valozhyn.
The parties also discussed facilitating Belarus’s participation in religious events in Israel, including the Holy Fire ceremony in Jerusalem, as well as holding events in the country dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster, “including in view of the fact that around 1,500 liquidators of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident consequences live in the country.”
