Two cases of tick bites were registered in Belarus in January 2026. This was reported by Head of the Anti-Epidemic Department of the Republican Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology and Public Health Vlada Zapolskaya.
According to her, the first cases this year were recorded in Brest and Mahilyow regions. The attacks occurred during work in agricultural buildings. No reports of tick bites were registered in February; however, with the end of the морозы, tick activity is expected to resume.
Zapolskaya stressed that the widespread belief that snow and severe frosts have a detrimental effect on ticks does not correspond to reality. Under snow cover and in layers of fallen leaves, they remain in a state of suspended animation, and when temperatures rise to +5 degrees Celsius, they emerge to the surface.
In Belarus, there are areas where tick activity persists year-round. These include the warmer districts of Homel, Hrodna and Brest regions.
Every year, about 30,000 people seek medical assistance in connection with tick bites.
