Lithuanian police on May 12-13 conducted an operation targeting individuals involved in cigarette smuggling from Belarus using weather balloons.
On May 12, two people were detained, including one of the main organisers and operators. They are suspected of organising and supplying contraband cigarettes to distribution “points” in Ignalina and the surrounding district.
On May 13, police carried out 24 searches in Ignalina, Vilnius, Trakai, Lentvaris and the Švenčionys district. Two more suspects were detained.
During the operation, around 10,000 packs of contraband cigarettes worth more than 42,000 euros were seized from illegal circulation. Illegally stored firearms and ammunition of various calibres were also confiscated.
Charges have been brought against two individuals who allegedly acted as part of a group organising the transportation and distribution of contraband goods. One of them also faces charges of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
