Lithuania’s prime minister-designate and leader of the ruling Social Democratic Party, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, declined to reveal his plans regarding sanctions against Belarus during a meeting with lawmakers from the opposition Homeland Union–Lithuanian Christian Democrats.
As LRT reported, when discussing relations with Minsk and pressure from the United States over sanctions, Sinkevičius said Lithuania should seek to maintain good relations with Washington.
“Partnership is not one-sided: we provide support, not just gratitude. But I do not think Belarus is a major subject of negotiations,” he said, recalling that Lithuania had backed the initiative concerning the Strait of Hormuz.
However, as LRT notes, the politician did not specify how the issue of extending European sanctions on Belarusian fertilisers would be addressed in February.
On Tuesday, the Lithuanian Seimas is expected to approve Mindaugas Sinkevičius as prime minister. He will then have time to form a cabinet and present it to parliament.
