Former director of the Skidzel Sugar Plant Dzmitry Yahorau, who was convicted in the so-called sugar case, has died in a penal colony, reports Flagshtok, citing a former political prisoner.

In 2021, Yahorau was sentenced to 11 years in prison for accepting bribes. He was serving his sentence in Penal Colony No. 1 in Navapolatsk. According to the source, Yahorau had cancer and had been transferred to the republican prison hospital.

“They did not release him even before his death, despite knowing he was dying. Because people with unpaid claims are not released, although under the law terminally ill prisoners can be freed,” the source told the publication.

According to the source, the body was to be collected from the colony on May 7.
