European Union member states have officially approved the opening of the first negotiating cluster in the accession process for Ukraine and Moldova, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.

“This is a recognition of the determination, courage and hard work shown by both countries in advancing reforms, even in the face of immense challenges. And a signal that the EU’s offer of peace, stability and opportunity is unmatchable. Enlargement is a strategic choice,” the European Commission president said.

The cluster on fundamental issues will be opened at the first Intergovernmental Conference on Monday, June 15.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy welcomed the European Union’s decision and described it as a strong step.

“Ukraine is defending itself and, in doing so, all of Europe — the idea that European nations can live united, free and in peace. As we have said, Ukraine is fulfilling everything required, and it is important that the European Union also keeps its word. The opening of the first negotiating cluster is significant political and moral support for our state and our citizens,” he said.
