The International Modern Pentathlon Union has lifted restrictions on Belarusian athletes’ participation. The corresponding decision was adopted by the union’s executive board.
“UIPM is lifting restrictions for Belarusian athletes, and this takes effect immediately. At all future UIPM events (with the exception of the upcoming World Cup in Pazardzhik), Belarusian athletes will be allowed to compete in national uniforms, under their flag and anthem,” the statement said.
Earlier, the International Olympic Committee recommended removing all remaining restrictions on Belarusian athletes and teams.
The union’s statement notes that Belarusian athletes will be able to participate without restrictions already at the World Cup in Budapest, which will take place from June 9 to 13. The competition in Pazardzhik begins tomorrow, so the union’s decision does not apply there, and representatives of the country will still only be able to compete as neutral athletes.
At the same time, Russian athletes will continue to be allowed to compete only as neutral athletes, as before.
“Belarusian athletes have participated in our competitions on a neutral basis since 2023 without any incidents. I am grateful to all parties for respecting the process we implemented, which ensured the safety of all athletes.
In conclusion, I would once again like to emphasize our support for members of the Ukrainian community whose lives continue to suffer because of the military occupation of their country. As a global sports organization, we strive to promote sport as a place where people can forget their differences and come together, competing in a spirit of peace and respect,” said union president Rob Stull.
