Ukraine’s embassy in Minsk continues to operate in order to minimize the risks of Belarus being further drawn into the war and to assist Ukrainian citizens, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine told LIGA.net in response to an inquiry.
“The activities of Ukraine’s embassy in the Republic of Belarus are primarily aimed at minimizing the risks of Belarus being further drawn into Russia’s armed aggression against our state, providing consular assistance and support in returning illegally deported Ukrainian children to Ukraine, and offering consular protection and assistance to Ukrainian citizens who are on the territory of the Russian Federation or held in its penitentiary institutions,” the ministry said in its response.
In addition, the embassy is working with the foreign diplomatic corps on cases of Russia’s violations of international humanitarian law, including Belarus’s involvement in the forced deportation of Ukrainian children.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry clarified that Ukraine’s military attaché office in Belarus is not operating.
Belarus’s embassy in Ukraine has been closed since 2022. The area around the building has become overgrown with weeds.
