Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya met with Armenian President Vahagn Khachaturyan at the World Economic Forum in Davos on January 23.

The leader of Belarusian democratic forces welcomed the settlement of the Armenian-Azerbaijani crisis and the Armenian government’s course toward strengthening relations with the European Union, the Tsikhanouskaya Office reported.

Tsikhanouskaya thanked the Armenian authorities for refusing to extradite persecuted Belarusians at the request of the Lukashenka regime and for ensuring that Belarusians in Armenia can feel safe.

The sides discussed the regional security situation, developments in Belarus, as well as joint activities in international formats, in particular participation in the European Political Community summit, which will be held in Yerevan.

Tsikhanouskaya expressed hope that she would be able to visit Armenia this year, as a visit planned for the autumn to the Euronest forum did not take place.

On the sidelines of the forum, Tsikhanouskaya also briefly spoke with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan.

“Thank you to Armenia for its principled position and support for Belarusians. I am glad that both the president and the government maintain communication with our democratic forces and that we can resolve practical issues. Thanks to these contacts, last year we managed to save a number of Belarusians from possible extradition, and in some cases to resolve issues related to legalization and documents. It is important for us to know that Armenia’s position remains consistent, and we will continue our cooperation,” Tsikhanouskaya said.
