The traffic police are testing a new safety system on a section of the R-53 Slabada–Navasady highway. The new features were presented at a press conference at the National Press Center by Chief of the Main Traffic Police Directorate of the Interior Ministry Viktar Ratchankou.
In addition to speeding violations, cameras installed along the road section can now also detect other offenses: lack of a technical inspection certificate, talking on the phone while driving, and not wearing a seat belt.
“The systems read the license plate number, record the violation, and five kilometers later an information board already notifies the driver about it”, Ratchankou explained.
Detection of phone use and unfastened seat belts is currently operating in test mode. No fines are being issued for these violations yet. The traffic police said they would separately announce the transition to full operation.
Light indicators have also appeared along the road.
“A light indication system has been implemented along the roadway. It is probably most noticeable at night. What does it involve? Along the road barrier there is LED lighting that signals to the driver. Three indication colors are possible. Green light means the situation is normal. The driver may continue driving, and there is no danger ahead, provided the speed limit for that section is observed. Yellow light may also appear. This means conditions have worsened due to weather. There are systems in place to monitor weather conditions on the roadway. For example, fog, rain, or snow — the system will signal with a yellow LED strip along the right side of the road that conditions have deteriorated and the driver needs to pay extra attention. Red light indicates a more serious danger. This could mean ice, snow cover, a water film on the road, or that there is a traffic jam or accident ahead. The driver needs to be extremely careful”, Ratchankou explained.
In addition, roadside displays warn drivers about the presence of animals.
