The Viasna Human Rights Center reported that it has documented 183 cases of persecution linked to the so-called “European Humanities University (EHU) case.”
According to the rights group, 156 of those cases occurred in Belarus. Several relatives of students were arrested in administrative proceedings and sentenced to 15 days in detention.
As previously reported, the Supreme Court of Belarus designated the European Humanities University (EHU), which operates in Vilnius, along with its structural divisions, as an “extremist organization.”
The Prosecutor General’s Office claims that the university prepares Belarusian youth “to implement Western scenarios for transforming the political system, promoting the so-called democratic values, and ‘alternative’ interpretations of historical, cultural and other events.”
In Belarus, searches were carried out at the homes of graduates, students and other people associated with the university. It was also reported that KGB officers called people connected to EHU and invited them for questioning.
