Poland’s Podlaskie Border Guard unit reported the detention of six people involved in cigarette smuggling using weather balloons. All detainees have been placed in custody.
According to the border guards, a Belarusian citizen and a Lithuanian citizen were detained in the area of Gródek. They had arrived to collect 3,000 packs of cigarettes delivered by a weather balloon from Belarus.
On the same day, two Polish citizens were detained in Jasionówka after arriving to collect a similar shipment.
In Sokółka, border guards stopped a Volkswagen for inspection. Two Lithuanian citizens were found to be carrying 4,000 packs of cigarettes.
Since the beginning of the year, Polish border guards have detained 22 people in the Podlaskie Voivodeship in connection with airborne smuggling.
