Polish President Karol Nawrocki has proposed using diplomatic and economic measures to halt violations of Polish airspace by weather balloons and drones. In his view, coordinated action with allies could deter Belarus and Russia from hybrid activities. He made the remarks at an annual meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and the Polish Armed Forces.
“We are constantly monitoring and responding to violations of Polish airspace, currently mainly by balloons, but also by drones. To achieve the expected results, we must stop and neutralise pressure on the state border. Of course, it is necessary not only to continue military operations, but also to use diplomatic and economic instruments even more intensively. This is achieved at the international level, but here we need even more coordinated efforts.
In this connection, I ask that, as part of regular meetings of the National Security Committee of the Council of Ministers with the participation of a representative of the National Security Bureau, appropriate decisions be prepared for the Council of Ministers aimed at correcting the Polish state’s approach and expanding coordination and cooperation with our allies in countering such threats. Only a comprehensive and resolute approach will convince Russia and Belarus to cease actions that destabilise our security system,” Nawrocki said.
He also noted that the Polish army continues to take part in strengthening the protection of the border with Belarus. Nawrocki said that the possibility of illegal border crossings is currently limited and argued that efforts should be made to transfer full responsibility for border protection to internal security services.
“Today, the possibility of illegal border crossings is limited. We should strive to further transfer full responsibility for guarding the eastern border of the Republic of Poland to the Border Guard and the police. This course of action will make it possible to reduce the involvement of operational forces,” he said.
The Polish president also noted that the mass incursion of Russian drones in September 2025 demonstrated the need to review and change approaches to responding to such incidents, including the level of integration of command posts, information flows, and individual elements of the decision-making process.
