The Lithuanian Seimas on Tuesday approved in the first reading a government proposal to introduce the possibility of limiting the amount of fuel contained in the tanks of trucks entering from third countries.

Seventy-eight deputies voted in favor of the new provision, while seven abstained, Delfi reported.

If the draft is adopted in the final vote, the Lithuanian government will be able to limit, starting next year, the volume of fuel in truck tanks that can be imported duty-free. The Ministry of Finance of Lithuania, justifying the government’s proposal, noted that currently trucks enter from Belarus with full tanks, but the fuel is later siphoned off.

The ministry also pointed out that similar restrictions already exist in Poland and Latvia. Trucks entering Poland are allowed to carry no more than 600 liters of fuel in their tanks, and those entering Latvia no more than 200 liters.
