The Lithuanian National Security Commission recommended that the government consider the issue of opening border crossing points on the Belarusian border at its meeting on November 19.

«The commission recommended that the government consider the possibility of opening the borders at tomorrow’s meeting, specifically the two points we closed. This issue will be included in the agenda of tomorrow’s government meeting,» Delfi quoted Lithuanian Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė as saying.

Ruginienė noted that the situation with weather balloons had stabilized in recent days. The Prime Minister stated that she would support the proposal to open the border if the situation does not change.

«If the situation worsens, we reserve the right to close the borders again at any moment or not to open them tomorrow. We need to wait until tomorrow,» she noted.

If the decision to open the border is made, it will come into force within 24 hours.

«Usually, a certain period of one day is set for all preparatory work. Regardless of when we make the decision (…), there is always a one-day period for preparatory work,» Ruginienė stated.

It should be recalled that Lithuania closed the border crossing points on the Belarusian border until November 30 due to weather balloons flying in from Belarus, which interfered with airport operations. In response, Belarus banned the exit of Lithuanian trucks. The trucks were moved to special paid parking lots. Today, Lithuanian and Belarusian border guards held technical talks.
