Russia will achieve its goals in the conflict in Ukraine despite the failure of the agreements reached between the presidents of the United States and Russia in Anchorage, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said.
“If you look more deeply, Emmanuel Macron publicly said that there is no longer any Anchorage, no understandings, that ‘America is with us again.’ And Ukraine’s acting foreign minister Andrii Sybiha said: ‘We buried the Anchorage agreements.’
If these are assessments that the Americans share, then what can we do? Of course, we have repeatedly said that we prefer a political and diplomatic settlement, but we will achieve our goals under any circumstances,” he said, according to TASS.
As a reminder, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Lavrov met yesterday. Russia’s Foreign Ministry said after the talks that the Russian foreign minister had reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to the Anchorage agreements. Rubio, in turn, said that new ideas would be needed to end the Russian-Ukrainian war because Ukraine had not accepted the terms agreed in Anchorage.
“Our conscience is clear. As they say, a man keeps his word: if he says something, he does it. We said we were ready. On the other side, however, that approach has apparently been modified, judging by Rubio’s remarks. But the objectives set by President Putin in June 2024, as he has repeatedly stressed, will be fulfilled,” Lavrov continued.
He also acknowledged that U.S. President Donald Trump apparently had been unable to influence Volodymyr Zelenskyy and persuade him to make concessions.
“As for claims that the Anchorage agreements have failed, we probably need to understand who exactly failed,” Lavrov said.
“If there is a proposal and there is agreement, then the results agreed in Anchorage presumably existed? They did. President Trump, and this is no great secret, said more than once that this was our proposal, partly a compromise. We accepted that it was a compromise proposal, and any agreement, presumably, must inevitably contain an element of compromise. But he added that Zelenskyy would do what he proposed. Well, that did not happen,” the minister said.
