Latvia’s State Border Guard reported the interception of a shipment of contraband cigarettes. The incident took place on Friday.
A border patrol near Piedruja spotted a suspicious object in the Daugava River. Two tractor tyres were eventually pulled from the water. Upon inspection, officers found more than 66,000 NZ Gold cigarettes with Belarusian excise stamps inside them.
It should be noted that smugglers also actively use river routes on the Belarusian-Lithuanian border.
