The Hrodna Regional Court on July 24 sentenced civic activist Valiantsina Navumava to seven years in a general-regime penal colony, matching the sentence requested by the state prosecutor, Hrodna Human Rights reported.

Navumava was found guilty on nine articles of the Criminal Code, including “facilitating extremist activity” and “inciting other social hatred.”

She was also convicted on charges of defamation, violating the privacy of correspondence, insulting Aliaksandr Lukashenka, insulting a public official, desecrating state symbols and insulting a judge.

The case initially also included a charge under Part 2 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code — “defaming Lukashenka”.

Navumava was a long-time member of the left-wing party Fair World. In 2017, she was fined 15 basic units in an administrative case for participating in protests against the so-called “social parasites” decree.

The activist was detained on Sept. 5, 2025, and placed in Pretrial Detention Centre No. 1 in Hrodna.
