Fogs observed across many parts of the country and in Minsk will persist during the day, as well as overnight and on the morning of 1 December. Visibility in fog will range from 100 to 500 metres. An orange weather alert has been issued.

On 1–2 December, weather conditions in Belarus will continue to be shaped by an area of high atmospheric pressure formed within a humid air mass. Predominantly cloudy weather is expected. Localised light precipitation in the form of rain and wet snow is forecast. Some areas may see light ice accretion, with icy patches on the roads. Winds will be variable, light to moderate. Night-time temperatures will range from -3 to +4°C, with daytime temperatures between -1 and +5°C.

The Interior Ministry notes that dense fog, damp conditions and overcast weather reduce visibility and worsen road conditions, while also distorting distance perception.

The ministry recommends:

  • choosing a safe speed that allows drivers to stop within the limits of visibility (in dense fog this may be around 20 km/h);
  • increasing following distance by 1.5–2 times;
  • switching on low-beam headlights and front and rear fog lights; the use of high beams is not advised;
  • taking into account the possibility of icy patches when humidity is high and temperatures are around zero;
  • avoiding sudden braking, lane changes and overtaking; and exercising extra caution at pedestrian crossings and intersections.

In very dense fog, when visibility is extremely limited, drivers are advised to stop in a safe place, switch on hazard lights and leave the carriageway.

It is also important to remain predictable for other road users by using light and, when necessary, sound signals during any manoeuvres.
