The first lynx was shot in the Sharkovshchyna hunting reserve, where the hunting season for the species has been open in Belarus from October 1 to January 31. The news was reported on November 9 by the Belarusian Society of Hunters and Fishermen.
Hunting this wild animal had been banned for about 40 years. It was permitted starting in 2025, explained by an increase in the lynx population in certain regions of the country.
Hunting for lynx is now allowed in 15 districts of the Vitebsk Region, 14 of the Homel Region, two of the Hrodna Region, and eight of the Minsk Region.
The lynx, like the bear, in Belarus has a dual conservation status — it is both a game species and a wild animal included in the national Red Data Book.
