During the year in Belarus, 116,530 people died, which is 1,406 more than in 2024. The highest number of deaths was recorded in the Minsk Region — 19,468, and the lowest in the Hrodna Region — 13,457. In Minsk, 18,881 people died last year.

Last year, 175 children under the age of five died in Belarus, including 173 under the age of one.

At the same time, in 2025, 54,257 people were born in Belarus, which is 4,681 fewer than in 2024. More than 9,000 children were born last year in Minsk (9,543), the Minsk Region (9,139) and the Brest Region (9,285). The lowest number of births was recorded in the Vitsyebsk Region — 5,773.

The natural population decline last year amounted to 62,273 people, which is 6,087 more than in 2024. The largest natural decrease was recorded in the Vitsyebsk (10,801) and Minsk (10,329) regions. The smallest was in the Hrodna Region — 7,421. In Minsk, the figure stood at 9,338.

The natural population decline was partially offset by net migration, which amounted to 9,073 people, 415 fewer than in 2024. Net migration was recorded only in Minsk (7,699) and the Minsk Region (8,709). Other regions recorded negative migration balances, the largest in the Homiel Region (-2,218).

According to Belstat, the number of arrivals last year totalled 349,101, while departures stood at 340,028. Compared with 2024, both arrivals and departures increased.

As a result, Belarus’s population decreased by 53,200 people last year, as reported at the end of March when Belstat published data on the population as of January 1, 2026.

It should be noted that in 2020–2023 Belstat did not publish data on births, deaths or natural population change. However, compared with the previous decade, the downward trend in births continues. For comparison, in 2017 more than 102,500 people were born in the country, and in 2019 — 87,600. Mortality figures in 2016–2019 stood at 119,000–120,000.

The pace of natural population decline has accelerated compared with the previous decade. In 2017, it amounted to 16,700 people, while in 2019 it had reached nearly 32,900.

Net migration growth was also recorded in the previous decade, although figures varied significantly. In 2017, it amounted to just 3,874 people, while in 2019 it reached 13,870.
