Warsaw police have detained a 33-year-old Belarusian and a 48-year-old Ukrainian. Posing as police officers, they deceived an 85-year-old woman and took her money as part of a supposed “police operation”.

In mid-April, the woman received a call from someone posing as a postal worker, followed by a call from an alleged police officer. The perpetrators convinced the pensioner that her savings were at risk and that the money needed to be handed over to the police.

When the fake officer arrived at the woman’s home, she handed him 21,000 zlotys using the password “angel”.

Police identified and detained the suspects. They acted together: one collected the money while the other monitored the situation.

By court order, both have been placed in custody. They face up to eight years in prison for fraud.
