Over the past year Belarus purchased about 54,000 tons of Russian pet food worth nearly $176 million, the newspaper Vedomosti reports.
Experts note that there are several reasons for this situation. Many countries do not supply such goods to Belarus because of sanctions, making it easier to purchase pet food from Russia. Trade is also facilitated by the fact that both countries are members of the Eurasian Economic Union, which provides simplified customs procedures and mutual recognition of veterinary certificates, as well as by the geographical proximity of the two states. Another factor is the lower cost of Russian pet food compared with European products.
