Supreme Court Finds Antanas Gecia­vicius Guilty of Genocide of the Belarusian People

The Supreme Court of Belarus has found Antanas Gecia­vicius guilty of committing genocide against the Belarusian people during the Second World War.

Due to his death, the guilty verdict against Antanas Gecia­vicius was issued without sentencing.

Antanas Gecia­vicius was born in what is now Lithuania. During the occupation of the BSSR, he led a platoon of the first company of the 12th police battalion. This paramilitary unit carried out punitive operations against civilians. Prosecutors established that Gecia­vicius was responsible for more than 6,000 victims, including children. After the war, attempts were made to bring him to justice, but without success.

Antanas Gecia­vicius died in 2001. He was never held accountable.
