Lithuania currently has no plans to ban passenger bus services to Belarus and Russia, the country’s Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius said.
Sinkevičius noted that he recently met with the prime ministers of Latvia and Estonia but had not heard any proposals from them to ban passenger bus services to Belarus and Russia.
“We have the possibility and a plan to restrict or even completely close the border, but this should be done not for political reasons, but taking the security context into account,” LRT quoted Sinkevičius as saying.
According to the Lithuanian prime minister, the government has not received recommendations from military intelligence to close the border or halt bus services.
“As of today, we have no such instructions from military intelligence. Relations with Belarusians are certainly tense because of various provocations and instrumentalized migration, but I do not think we should resolve these issues for political reasons at this time,” Sinkevičius stressed.
It was previously reported that Latvia plans to end passenger bus services with Belarus and Russia starting in 2027. Lithuanian conservative Seimas member Arvydas Anušauskas called on the Lithuanian government to follow Latvia’s example.
