SBU Announces Detention of Agent Working for Belarus’s State Border Committee

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced the detention in Kyiv of an agent who had been working for Russian and Belarusian special services.

“On the order of Belarus’s State Border Committee, he was spying on the locations of the Defense Forces,” the SBU said in a statement.

The assignment from Russian special services involved adjusting strikes on energy facilities in the Kyiv region. The SBU documented how the detainee conducted surveillance from the window of his own apartment, monitoring the perimeter of one of Kyiv’s thermal power plants. He then transmitted the collected information to his Russian handlers.

The detainee is a manual laborer. He was recruited via Telegram, where he posted pro-Russian comments. The man was counting on a subsequent “evacuation” outside Ukraine. To that end, he prepared a tactical backpack with essential items that he planned to use while illegally crossing the border.

The man has been charged with high treason.
