Reconstruction of the main building of the Belarusian State University is underway in Minsk, the company Minskstroy reported today. Demolition work is currently in progress.
“In Block A, which runs parallel to the avenue, builders have dismantled partitions and cladding, removed old utilities, ceilings and concrete floors, and stripped plaster from the walls. They are reinforcing the structures and building new partitions. The brick walls will be strengthened using the shotcrete method,” the company said.
About 80 tons of old shelving units will have to be dismantled and removed from the library premises. They will be cut up for scrap metal.
The building’s roof will also be replaced.
“The project предусматривает restoration of the facade (repair of plaster and decorative stucco) while preserving the building’s external appearance. The spatial layout of the interiors will also remain unchanged. Double-height halls, galleries, the main marble-clad vestibule, entrance groups with paneled polished oak doors, and the windows — which were replaced earlier — will be preserved.
Internal partitions and doors, engineering systems, floors, ceilings, elevators and elevator shafts will be replaced. Stair flights will be renovated; on the central staircase the railing will be replaced with a similar one. Modern finishing will be carried out in the assembly hall, library, reading rooms and book storage, lecture halls and research laboratories, the BSU museum, the cafeteria and other spaces.
The project also предусматривает equipping the building with new furniture and modern equipment,” said Mikita Kavalenya, foreman of Construction Department No. 199, which is carrying out the work.
