Belarus’ Investigative Committee announced the launch of special proceedings against 62-year-old Dzmitry Hleizer. He is charged under Part 1 of Article 209 (fraud) and Part 3 of Article 430 (accepting a bribe) of Belarus’ Criminal Code.
He has been instructed to appear at the Brest Region Department of the Investigative Committee.
Dzmitry Hleizer previously served as deputy director of the Baranavichy Machine Tool Plant, a branch of Atlant CJSC. According to information from Legal Initiative, Hleizer was detained in Slovenia on April 29, 2022, at the request of the Belarusian Prosecutor’s Office submitted through Interpol, despite officially residing in Spain.
During the court proceedings, the Slovenian side concluded that the case had a political dimension, that the materials submitted were insufficiently substantiated, and that extraditing Hleizer could result in a violation of his rights. In June 2022, the Slovenian Prosecutor’s Office found no legal grounds for extradition, the court rejected Belarus’ extradition request, and Hleizer was subsequently released. Later, the Supreme Court of Slovenia ruled that his two-month detention had been unlawful.
