The Human Rights Center Viasna has learned the verdict in the case of five fighters of the Kalinoŭski Regiment. The trial in absentia of Aliaksei Kavalchuk, Aliaksei Nazarau, Dzianis Prokharau, Pavel Shurmei and Vadzim Kabanchuk began on 28 January. The verdict was delivered on 5 March.
According to Viasna, former commander Dzianis Prokharau was sentenced to 25 years in a reinforced-regime penal colony. The first five years of the sentence must be served in prison. He was also fined 700 base units.
Former commander Pavel Shurmei was also sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment in a reinforced-regime penal colony, with the first five years to be served in prison. His fine amounts to 2,000 base units.
Former deputy commander and defence representative of the Coordination Council Vadzim Kabanchuk was sentenced to 25 years in a reinforced-regime penal colony, with the first five years to be served in prison, and fined 700 base units. Kabanchuk was also stripped of his military rank of senior reserve lieutenant.
Instructor Aliaksei Nazarau was sentenced to 12 years in a reinforced-regime penal colony and fined 700 base units.
Fighter Aliaksei Kavalchuk received a sentence of 12 years of imprisonment in a reinforced-regime penal colony and a fine of 500 base units.
