The farewell ceremony for cameraman and former political prisoner Dzianis Sakalousky will take place in Minsk on March 9 from 10:00 to 13:00 at the address: Minsk District, agrotown of Pryluki, Lesnaya Street, 11/19.
The burial will take place at Atolin Cemetery at 14:00, followed by a memorial meal at 15:00. Transportation will be organized from the farewell location to the cemetery and the memorial gathering for those without personal vehicles.
The information was announced by his daughter, journalist Vasilina Sakalouskaya.
“Please, I ask you to come and support my grandmother and grandfather. This is the hardest time for them and for me, and unfortunately I cannot be physically there. If you can be there for me and on my behalf, I will be very grateful. Please pray and think about my father so that he may find peace in his native land, in his beloved Pryluki,” she wrote on Facebook.
Dzianis Sakalousky worked as a cameraman for the television channel Belarus-1 for more than ten years and also cooperated with foreign broadcasters, including ARD, ZDF, DW, Al Jazeera, ABC and NRK. In 2020 he joined the strike at the Belarusian State Television and Radio Company.
After being dismissed, he worked with former colleagues to create an independent media platform — the so-called “alternative television.” On December 22 he was detained together with Kseniya Lutskina in the “Press Club” case. Initially he was charged with aiding tax evasion. Dzianis spent eight months in Pretrial Detention Center No. 1.
After members of the Press Club were pardoned in August 2021, the preventive measure against him was changed to a travel restriction, but he remained a suspect in a case concerning a conspiracy to seize power by unconstitutional means. Until the end of May 2022 he remained under supervision and was considered a suspect under Part 1 of Article 357.
After his release he was forced to emigrate to Germany. On February 21 he died in Berlin.
