Many around the world want to drive a wedge between Belarus and China. Belarusian Prime Minister Aliaksandr Turchyn made the statement during a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Dushanbe, where the two countries’ heads of government had arrived to attend a Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) event.

Turchyn said that Minsk and Beijing would mark the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in three months. Over this period, the two countries had established a relationship of trust in political dialogue, economic ties, and regional and humanitarian cooperation.

“One key point must be noted: China is now seen in Belarus as a true friend, a model in state-building and responsible conduct on the international stage. We hope our Chinese friends also recognise our sincere attitude at a time when many around the world want to drive a wedge between the Belarusian-Chinese partnership,” Turchyn said.

Turchyn noted that a visit by Chinese President Xi Jinping was expected.

“I believe that the long-awaited visit by the Chinese president in Belarus’s anniversary year will be a clear marker of our relationship. The President of Belarus is ready to offer his dear friend the highest level of hospitality. As you know well, the leaders of our two countries have tasked us with giving the partnership concrete, practical and material substance. This falls within the remit of, and is a direct responsibility of, the governments of both countries. I would like to thank the Chinese side for the constructive conduct of the Commission on Trade and Economic Cooperation meeting held in Beijing on October 14. I understand that the talks between the relevant agencies were substantive and covered a wide range of issues,” he said.
