“It is now clear that, according to the information available to us, the FPV drone was of Ukrainian origin. This is confirmed by the wreckage, as well as by a communication from the Ukrainian side and information that contact with one of the drones was lost during the attack. This was probably the drone that exploded on the territory of the Republic of Lithuania. There is no doubt that it was carrying explosives,” the prime minister said after a meeting of the National Security Commission.
He said the Lithuanian side had no doubt that the drone had flown in from the direction of Poland.
“We checked the data with representatives who were present at the meeting, including when and from where the drone entered Lithuanian airspace. There is no doubt that it entered through the Schengen Area from the Polish side,” he said.
It should be noted that Poland has not yet officially confirmed that the drone entered Lithuania from its territory.
The prime minister noted that the drone’s direction of travel also determined the response to it.
“That is why the response was somewhat different: fighter jets scrambled into the air detected a moving object on their radars. It was detected by radar, but establishing visual contact and seeing the object was impossible due to adverse weather conditions,” he said.
Lithuanian services are now trying to determine what caused the drone to fall and how the explosion occurred.
“Whether it fell because it ran out of fuel or because it lost altitude. The circumstances are being investigated, including whether it exploded on impact with the ground, a forest or trees. This is still being established,” Sinkevičius added.
The commission meeting also discussed an incident in Vilnius involving an attempted arson attack on SpaceX premises. The Starlink antennas did not catch fire, while the control unit sustained minor fire damage.
“We regard this as sabotage and are searching for those who committed the crime. In this connection, we agreed that, in light of the situation, the level of vigilance would be increased at facilities managing critical infrastructure of national importance, of which there are more than 15,” the Lithuanian prime minister said.
