Ukraine plans to form new brigades as Russia expands its operations on the northern front and seeks to extend the active front line by 160 km.

According to Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, having failed to achieve success on its main axes of attack, Russia is attempting to expand active operations in northern Ukraine. Under these circumstances, Ukraine should create new brigades rather than simply reinforce existing ones, he said.

“Increasing the size of a brigade does not increase the length of the front line that it can effectively cover,” Syrskyi told Liga.net.

The commander-in-chief also pointed to the changing nature of the front line, noting that it has expanded significantly in depth.

“Therefore, when the front expands both in width and in depth, the arithmetic is unavoidable: new military units are needed,” Syrskyi said.

On June 16, Syrskyi announced the reinforcement of defenses along the border with Belarus and the creation of new drone units in that sector.
