Russia’s Defense Ministry said it had carried out a strike on Ukraine using the Oreshnik missile system.

“Last night, in response to a terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime on the residence of the President of the Russian Federation in the Novgorod region, carried out on the night of December 29, 2025, the Armed Forces of Russia delivered a massive strike with long-range high-precision weapons from land- and sea-based platforms, including the Oreshnik mobile ground-based intermediate-range missile system, as well as strike unmanned aerial vehicles, against critically important facilities on the territory of Ukraine,” the ministry said in a statement.

The ministry claimed that drone production facilities and energy infrastructure had been hit. It should be noted that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called Russia’s statements about an attack on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s residence a lie. Later, U.S. President Donald Trump also said that no strike had taken place.

The Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine declared a missile alert across the country due to the threat of ballistic missile use, which were launched from the Kapustin Yar test range. Explosions were reported in the Lviv region, where, according to official information, a critical infrastructure facility came under attack. The Ukrainian side did not confirm the use of the Oreshnik missile. However, the Western Air Command said the missile was flying at a speed of about 13,000 km/h. Its type will be determined after debris is examined. The head of the Lviv Regional Military Administration, Maksym Kozytskyi, said laboratory tests had been carried out at the site of the missile strike. Radiation levels were within normal limits, and no excess of harmful substances in the air was recorded.

“As a result of the missile attack in the settlement of Rudno, part of the Lviv community, the automatic gas safety system was triggered. For safety reasons, gas supply has been temporarily suspended for 376 consumers on several streets. This is not an авария in the network — the protection was activated due to the shock wave. Specialists are already working at the site and checking the equipment. After that, gas supply will be restored,” Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said in the morning.

Other populated areas in Ukraine were also hit. According to the State Emergency Service, four people were killed and 24 injured in Kyiv as a result of shelling. Thirty-two people were rescued. In Kyiv, drones damaged residential buildings, including high-rise blocks, as well as a shopping center and a sanatorium. Critical infrastructure was damaged, there were disruptions in water supply, and heating was affected. Kyiv’s metro system introduced changes to its operations. One section was de-energized.

In the Kyiv region, private houses, warehouses and other buildings were damaged.

In Kryvyi Rih, a mine was left without power due to a Russian raid. Miners were brought to the surface.
