Residents of an apartment building in Viciebsk located next to a ground collapse site will be temporarily relocated while restoration work is carried out. The work is expected to take approximately one day.

The building’s foundation has not been damaged. Crews have begun clearing access to the site to allow for the installation of concrete slabs, as well as backfilling and stabilizing the soil, the newspaper Vitbichi reported.

“The collapse affected an area measuring 10 by 20 metres. On the same day, three PAG airfield slabs were delivered and placed in the sinkhole area. The next step is to install sheet piling. The piles will retain the soil, which will then be backfilled to the required level,” said Deputy Chairman of the City Executive Committee Pavel Shikshnian.

As previously reported, the ground collapse on Schrader Street occurred earlier today during excavation work for the installation of a sewer pipe. Heavy rainfall has been cited as the preliminary cause of the subsidence.
