Polish investigators have identified the person they believe was responsible for the death of Polish serviceman Mateusz Sitek on the border with Belarus. According to the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect is Moroccan citizen Mohamed Addamrou (Mohamed ADDAMROU).

According to the investigation, the incident took place on May 28, 2024, near the village of Dubicze Cerkiewne on the Polish-Belarusian border. Polish law enforcement authorities allege that the man, who was on the Belarusian side of the border barrier, stabbed Sitek, a sergeant in the 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade, through the fence. The serviceman was taken to hospital but died on June 6, 2024, at the Military Medical Institute in Warsaw.

The prosecutor’s office said that during the two-year investigation, more than 140 witnesses were questioned both in Poland and abroad, and forensic examinations were conducted.

On July 21, 2025, investigators issued a decision charging Mohamed Addamrou with murder under Article 148 of the Polish Criminal Code. A Polish court subsequently authorised his arrest, and law enforcement agencies placed the suspect on a wanted list and issued a European Arrest Warrant.

According to prosecutors, investigative measures established that the suspect is in Belarus. As a result, on December 2, 2025, the Polish authorities sent a request to the Belarusian authorities seeking his provisional arrest and extradition to Poland.

Because the suspect remains outside Poland and the extradition process has not been completed, the investigation was suspended on May 22, 2026.

“The Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office emphasises that all state services and agencies have been engaged in procedural activities and in establishing the circumstances of this case. They regard identifying the perpetrator, locating him and bringing him before Polish justice as a matter of honour,” the statement said.
